What’s this all about?

In Australia, only 18%* of plastic packaging is recycled.

That's why we created Wonder Recycling Rewards - a fun and easy program for Aussie schools to recycle bread bags that might otherwise go to landfill, and earn rewards points to redeem on new sports equipment for their efforts. All the collected plastic will be used to create wonderful new things like school play equipment! PLUS all registered schools were in the draw to WIN one of five exercise circuits made from the recycled plastic we collect.

The program is now well underway across Australia with over 1,000 schools registered and taking part. All schools have until the first week of Term 3 to reach their recycling goals when collections will close. We can’t wait see what a difference we can make together!

The five lucky schools who will receive an exercise circuit made from the recycled plastic we collect are Sherwood Ridge Public School, Holland Park State School, Snowtown Area School, One School Global, Hamilton Campus and Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School.

We’re committing to doing better.

We’re making it our mission to not only fuel active kids with wholesome, nutritious food, but to also do our bit to help create a better future for Aussie kids to grow and thrive.

Here are some of the initiatives we’re currently working on:

REDUCE PLASTIC BAG WASTE

For more than a decade we have worked diligently to reduce the environmental impacts of our bread bags. We’ve already reduced the amount of plastic in our bread bags by 25% which is 400 tonnes less plastic per year! We continue to investigate more sustainable bread bag solutions, and we’re committed to finding ways to increase the recycled content in our bags. Wonder is also a proud foundation partner of the Redcycle soft plastic recycling scheme. Wonder Recycling Rewards is our newest initiative aimed at making it easier and fun for Aussie families to recycle soft plastics.

RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY

We’ve committed to converting all the bakeries we own in Australia to using renewable electricity to power production. And we are proud to say that from July 2021 all these bakeries will have moved to 100% renewable electricity. This will reduce the green house gas emissions from our bakery network by 61%. We have also replaced over 1,000 lights in our bakeries reducing electricity use for these lights by more than half.

LUNCHES FOR AUSSIE KIDS

Wonder has been a proud partner with Eat Up since 2018. Eat Up’s mission is to feed hungry kids so that they can grow, learn and succeed. Since our partnership began Eat Up has provided over 800,000 free lunches to school kids all over Australia, that’s over 11,000 sandwiches every week. Wonder is proud to provide the bread for these lunches to ensure they are delicious and full of goodness. You’ll also be pleased to know that most bread ends are repurposed by Eat Up and the bread bag tags recycled through Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs.

REDUCING BREAD TAG WASTE

Our team are rigorously working on a more sustainable bread tag solution, whilst not compromising on the quality and freshness of our bread - and we’re getting close! Until then, you can recycle your bread tags via your local school as part of our Wonder Recycling Rewards program. Alternatively, Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs also have bread tag recycling programs.
